NHL Hockey Betting: Chicago Blackhawks at Washington Capitals

The Chicago Blackhawks are smarting from a 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers last night and now face another tough Eastern Conference team as they travel to Washington, DC to take on the Capitals. Chicago is now 2-2-0 after their setback to the Flyers and face a Washington team that is playing only their third game of the season after splitting the first two. The Caps had little trouble with New Jersey in their opening game but were blitzed by a resurgent San Jose Sharks side 5-0 in their previous contest.

Chicago will turn to backup goaltender Scott Darling for tonight’s game. That’s their usual pattern for back to back games but they might like to give him a shot in net for no other reason to see what he can do. Starting goalie Corey Crawford has been good but not great in the early going and Darling did a nice job filling in when Crawford was sidelined with injury last season. The Capitals will turn to Braden Holtby who is coming off a stellar season. It’s been a mixed bag so far but Holtby was one of the real workhorses among goalies last year. Barring injury, you can expect to see him between the pipes in well over 60 games this season.

Alex Ovechkin will be back in the lineup here as well. He missed the San Jose game–he was ‘benched’ for missing the morning skate which he blamed on a incorrectly set alarm clock. In a matchup of two teams looking for a strong ‘bounce back’ effort we’ll favor the Blackhawks. We’ll look for as many opportunities as possible to play the Western Conference against the East–and particularly the Central Division against the East–until further notice. The Blackhawks have too much talent to slide too far. Washington has won three of the last four head to head with the last two being decided by a single goal. With games this close it’s about time for Chicago to get some bounces.
