NFL Preseason Betting: Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Giants

More NFL preseason action for Saturday as the New York Giants host the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Giants are trying to bounce back from a disappointing 2013 campaign in which they went 7-9 due in large part to quarterback Eli Manning, who had his worst season as a pro. The Steelers also underachieved in 2013 finishing 8-8 and failing to make the playoffs. Although the Steelers are somewhat long in the tooth at the skill positions on both sides of the ball there is a feeling for both of these teams that they can get back in the postseason hunt this season with more focus and intensity.

The Giants played in the Hall of Fame game last weekend and typically the ‘game under the belt’ is an advantageous situation despite the fact that most of the key starters didn’t get any playing time. This is especially true if the ‘under the belt’ team is an underdog or a favorite of less than a field goal. The Giants got the victory over the Buffalo Bills in the Hall of Fame game which seems like it would be a good thing but actually works against this situational play–having a win ‘in the books’ serves to undermine the urgency the next time out. This is especially true for a team with a coach in Tom Coughlin that has never put a big emphasis on preseason games. The Giants are 19-21 SU in preseason during the Coughlin regime which isn’t embarrassing but doesn’t suggest that exhibition play is a serious priority.

In the other corner is Pittsburgh Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin who has been one of the best preseason coaches in the NFL during his tenure. The Steelers are 19-10 SU in preseason play under Tomlin and that’s despite a 0-4 SU/ATS record in 2013. Heading in to the regular season last year there wasn’t too much concern about the winless preseason but look for it to be an issue this year after the Steelers started the regular season 0-4 last year. Pittsburgh has better depth on both sides of the ball and we definitely don’t buy into the ‘game under the belt’ angle with the Giants in this one. Look for Pittsburgh to win outright.
