NFL Football Betting: New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons

The first Sunday of the NFL regular season is upon us and in this preview we’ll take a look at a NFC South divisional rivalry between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints at the Georgia Dome. Atlanta is coming off a brutal season going 4-12 and they’re obviously hoping for a bounce back year. New Orleans had a decent season last year going 11-5 before being eliminated in the Divisional Playoff round by the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

Even though this is the first game of the year for the Falcons it’s a big one for several reasons. They want to get off to a good start in front of their home fans after the miserable season a year ago. More significantly, they know they have to get at least one win over New Orleans if they’re going to make the playoffs. That’ll be a lot easier to do at the Georgia Dome than at the Superdome in New Orleans. The Saints are a home loving side and are on a 2-9-1 ATS run on the road.

At one point this was a very intense rivalry but in recent years it’s been very one sided with the Saints going 9-3 SU over the last six years. The Saints have also won six of the last seven games. Most of these games have admittedly been close (7 of last 11 head to head decided by four points or less) but since we expect the Falcons to regress this year not sure the past performance info applies here. New Orleans, on the other hand, is a legitimate championship contender.

For some reason there’s a perception that the Saints are a ‘soft’ team but don’t forget they beat a bruising Chicago team at Soldier Field and defeated Philadelphia in cold weather in the playoffs. That was a game in which every ersatz ‘wise guy’ was on Philadelphia since ‘the Saints can’t win in cold weather’. Atlanta’s home dominance is a thing of the past as they finished last season losing five of their last seven at the Georgia Dome. Even if Atlanta is going to be ‘better’ this year not sure they’re ready for this class.
