NFL Football Betting: Detroit Lions at San Diego Chargers

Opening Sunday in the NFL features an afternoon matchup between two teams looking to improve on solid 2014 seasons. The San Diego Chargers took a big step in 2014, going from perennial doormat to serious contender behind quarterback Phillip Rivers. Detroit has their own superstar quarterback in Matthew Stafford and made the playoffs last year with a record of 11-5.

The Chargers have reportedly put a big emphasis on improving their offensive line play which had a big role in keeping them out of the playoffs last year. Hard to forget the way they were manhandled by the Kansas City Chief with Rivers getting sacked seven times. The Chargers defense remains a work in progress and that’s a big concern against a potent Detroit offense. The Chargers have their own weapons on the offensive side of the ball but will be without Antonio Gates for four games–he’s suspended due to an off season violation of the NFL’s drug policy.

But it’s hard to be too excited about the Lions playing on the road. Detroit has been an awful road team in recent years–in fact, they’ve got the worst pointspread road record in the NFL since 2009 at 14-27-4 ATS. They were 2-6 ATS on the road last year. Were this on the mythical ‘neutral field’, we’d have to give Detroit the edge but the price looks about right when you factor in home field advantage. It’s mitigated somewhat by the fact that the Chargers are nothing special at home with an 8-8 ATS record over the previous two seasons. San Diego has been excellent in non conference play during that stretch–they’re on a 6-2 ATS run against NFC opponents. Both teams have started quickly in the past two years–Detroit is 6-2 ATS in the month of September while San Diego is 7-0-1.

Tough game to handicap with a case that can be made for both teams. We’ll take the points.
