College Football Betting: San Diego State at Oregon State

Saturday night college football features a game between Pac 12 entrant Oregon State and Mountain West conference representative San Diego State. The Beavers have a very good program but they often get lost in the hype over their in-state rivals Oregon. They’re 2-0 so far this season and hopes are high for a decent run in the Pac 12. That being said, they haven’t looked great as of yet which has resulted in a pointspread mark of 0-2 in the early going. Then again, they haven’t had opponents to test them yet facing overmatched Portland State and Hawaii. San Diego State is coming off a 7-5 season with a victory in the Idaho Potato Bowl. They’re 1-1 this year with an easy win over Northern Arizona followed by a narrow loss at #21 North Carolina.

The Beavers and Aztecs will both be well rested for this game having last played on September 6. Oregon State will begin Pac 12 play at USC next week while San Diego State starts their Mountain West schedule at home against UNLV. The break will likely help Oregon State more than SDSU–they’ve had some nagging injuries along the offensive and defensive lines in the early going which an extra week of rest should benefit greatly. San Diego State has a talented but erratic defense–they looked very good at times against North Carolina but ultimately would allow 24 points on 4 successive drives which cost them the game. The trick for the Aztecs will be to keep the ball out of the hands of Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion who is one of the best in the country but doesn’t get the national attention he deserves. SDSU’s running game has been decent so far but against the level of opposition that Oregon State has played thus far it’s hard to get a good read on their defense.

San Diego State lost a lot of defensive talent from last year and they’ve lost their best wide receiver (Ezell Ruffin) to injury. Oregon State won’t play at home again for another month and while they’ve got a bigger game on deck against USC they need to get the team playing at a higher level before entering Pac 12 play. They should win and cover here.
