College Football Betting: Louisville at Syracuse

Friday night college football has three games on tap but we’ll go to the top of the Sports Options live odds screen and preview ACC action between Syracuse and Louisville. Syracuse is 2-2 with losses in their last two games to Notre Dame and Maryland. Louisville is 4-1 on the season with their only loss an upset at Virginia. Syracuse is 1-3 against the pointspread while Louisville is 2-3 against the number.

It’s hard to get an accurate read on either of these teams. Louisville looked good in their first game of the year as they defeated Miami-FL 31-13 easily covering as a -5 point favorite. That victory looked a lot more impressive then than it does now–Miami may not be what they were cracked up to be before the season began and the Hurricanes have struggled both times they’ve stepped up in class this year. The Hurricanes’ three wins (Arkansas State, Florida A&M and Duke) are far from impressive. It’s important to keep in mind that the Cardinals lost three first round draft picks to the NFL from last year’s team including quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. It’s just not logical to think that they’re as good now as they were then which suggests to us that they may be overvalued as they head into conference play.

Syracuse is also a tough team to figure. Much was expected of them heading in to this season and they’ve been something of a disappointment (thus their 1-3 ATS record). They were life and death against FCS opponent Villanova in Week One, eventually escaping with a 24-23 victory but coming nowhere near covering as a -14′ point favorite. They had no trouble against overmatched Central Michigan before losing their last two games. The Notre Dame loss is excusable but we’re not so sure that their 14 point loss to Maryland as a -2 home favorite is. All in all, we have to conclude that this team has underachieved thus far.

So how to play this game? Our take is that Louisville is definitely the more talented side so we’ll lay the points. Also, the Cardinals have gone Under the total in all four posted totals this year while the Orange are Under in 3 of 4. We’ll play that as well.
