NBA Basketball Betting: Philadelphia 76ers at New Orleans Pelicans

The Philadelphia 76ers are a bottom feeder but they’re no longer the worst team in the NBA. They’ve moved one game ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves for that dubious distinction despite a 5 game losing streak and a 3-7 mark in their last 10 games. They’ll be glad to get out of the cold and snowy Northeast and travel to New Orleans to take on the hometown Pelicans. The Pelicans have pulled over the .500 mark but are still two games out of the last playoff spot in the Western Conference. They’ve also got to concern themselves with the Oklahoma City Thunder just one game behind. The 76ers, meanwhile, aren’t going anywhere other than the NBA’s draft lottery. They’re 4-13 in their last 17 games.

New Orleans hasn’t been great this season but they are on a definite upswing at the moment winning 3 straight and six of their last 10 games. They’ve been even more impressive as a pointspread proposition of late. The Pelicans are 11-7 ATS in their last 18 games and have been a very good pointspread play at home this season with a record of 12-6. They beat Dallas at home as a +3.5 point underdog in their last action and that’s significant as they’re 0-8 both straight up and ATS this year coming off a SU win as an underdog. That suggests a team that starts to feel a little too good about themselves after knocking off a superior opponent and sets themselves up for a ‘comeuppance’ in their next action.

Philadelphia has been a horrible pointspread play on the road this season (8-15) but they have shown some improvement of late with a 6-6 ATS record in their last 12 games. This shouldn’t be mistaken for improved play, however. The most likely scenario is that the prices are finally catching up to just how bad this Philadelphia team is and they’re covering some numbers as a result. New Orleans has a game against a struggling Denver team on deck so there’s no real chance of a ‘lookahead’. This is a game that I’d love to have a reason to take the points but I don’t–New Orleans is the better team and in a better pointspread situation.
