NBA Basketball Betting: New Orleans Pelicans at Cleveland Cavaliers

Short card of NBA action but this game between the New Orleans Hornets and Cleveland Cavaliers looks not only entertaining but a potentially solid betting value. The Hornets are a very intriguing team with emerging superstar Anthony Davis but its tough to figure out just how good they’ll be over the long haul. They’re coming off a solid win on the road at San Antonio which was something of a ‘litmus test’ about their ability to hang with the league’s elite. Cleveland is all of a sudden the most popular team in the NBA–not surprising since they began to be inundated by bandwagon jumpers within minutes of announcing that LeBron James was returning to the team. So far they haven’t looked overly impressive losing three of their first five games.

Overrated much? It was inevitable that the Cleveland Cavaliers would be this year with the signing of LeBron James. With rookie of the year Kyrie Irving and power forward Kevin Love it was ‘deja vu all over again’ from James’ arrival in Miami. While breathless fanboys suggested that the NBA just call of the season and declare the Cavs champions the reality is that this team is still a ‘work in progress’ and could be for the entire season. They’re suffering from a similar malady that befell the Miami Heat early in the LeBron era–no one knows their role. The result is that there’s too much standing around watching LeBron which isn’t effective. LeBron is frustrated that he’s not getting the necessary contributions from his team. Some of this has to be the responsibility of head coach David Blatt who came to the Cavs from a nice run at Maccabi Tel-Aviv and previous coached the Russian National team. Blatt is considered an all time great in Europe but he has zero NBA experience.

While the hysterical rants of the mainstream sports media (Can the Cavs turn things around?) are a little ridiculous after five games the reality is that Cleveland will be overvalued all season. And until they get on the same page you can likely make money betting against them.
