MLB Baseball Betting: San Francisco Giants at Oakland Athletics

The San Francisco Giants make the quick trip across the bay to take on local rivals the Oakland Athletics. In most seasons, this game would be a hotly anticipated matchup but not this season–the Giants are trying to stay alive for the final wild card spot in the National League. Currently, it’s held by the Chicago Cubs who have the inside track on clinching the spot sooner rather than later. They just need one more win, or one more Giants loss and they’ll lock up the final wild card spot and eliminate San Francisco. For now, however, the Giants are still alive.

Oakland has been in ‘playing out the string’ mode for awhile now. The reality of their bad season isn’t particularly surprising given their ‘small ball’ philosophy. When it works, it’s great. However when it goes bad it goes bad quickly. When a ‘small ball’ team isn’t clicking on all cylinders it’s hard for them to turn things around. Not that Oakland has shown much interest in doing so which just makes things all the worse.

Both starting pitchers–Sonny Gray and Mike Leake–are in poor form at the moment with a L3 ERA over 7. Their YTD numbers haven’t been nearly as bad but both teams have lost two of the last three games with their starter on the mound. The Giants have lost a small amount of money on the road, neither team is particularly good against right handers but the A’s have been a huge money loser at home. Oakland is 33-45 -20.3 units on their home field.

Given the relative poor form of both pitchers combined with the A’s struggles at home it’s difficult to understand why Oakland is such a solid favorite. The Giants swept the A’s earlier this season and they’ve got something to play for. Oakland doesn’t.
